As highlighted in the Italian and international literature on the topic, there is a close connection between the phenomenon of Classical Greek theatre and that of democratic participation in city life. Classical theatre acted as a key educational instrument on which it is ever of value to reflect. The ancients themselves were profoundly aware of the educational dimension of theatre: the literary sources analyzed in this article demonstrate that philosophers, historians, tragedians, and comic playwrights emphasized the educational function of theatre, in some cases from a critical perspective (see the complex position expressed by Plato). Many documents also bear witness to the fact that ancient Greek culture was itself engaged with complex issues surrounding the use of theatre, such as whether censorship was required or not, the relationship between ethics and aesthetics, and the relationship between education and politics.

Abstract
As highlighted in the Italian and international literature on the topic, there is a close connection between the phenomenon of Classical Greek theatre and that of democratic participation in city life. Classical theatre acted as a key educational instrument on which it is ever of value to reflect. The ancients themselves were profoundly aware of the educational dimension of theatre: the literary sources analyzed in this article demonstrate that philosophers, historians, tragedians, and comic playwrights emphasized the educational function of theatre, in some cases from a critical perspective (see the complex position expressed by Plato). Many documents also bear witness to the fact that ancient Greek culture was itself engaged with complex issues surrounding the use of theatre, such as whether censorship was required or not, the relationship between ethics and aesthetics, and the relationship between education and politics.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
