The paper aims at exploring an epistemological hypothesis: the argumentative structure of The Origin of Species could be truly understood only if we consider the complex process of discovery followed by Darwin in his early private notes, and particularly in his Transmutation Notebooks, then summarized in his Sketch (1842) and Essay (1844). The integrated logic of his scientific discovery and the strategies of defence of his Scientific Research Programme reveal an unexpected and underestimated modernity, outlining a coherent set of patterns for the first historical natural science.

Abstract

The paper aims at exploring an epistemological hypothesis: the argumentative structure of The Origin of Species could be truly understood only if we consider the complex process of discovery followed by Darwin in his early private notes, and particularly in his Transmutation Notebooks, then summarized in his Sketch (1842) and Essay (1844). The integrated logic of his scientific discovery and the strategies of defence of his Scientific Research Programme reveal an unexpected and underestimated modernity, outlining a coherent set of patterns for the first historical natural science.
