The present chapter summarizes (1) the mechanisms regulating spontaneous breathing activity fundamental to understand the pathophysiology of respiratory acid-base disorders, (2) the compensatory mechanisms, (3) signs and symptoms of hypercapnia and hypocapnia, and (4) causes of and treatment options for acute and chronic respiratory acid-base disorders.
