The elusive stabilization: the Assicurazioni Generali group between the two wars [La stabilizzazione sfuggente: le Assicurazioni Generali tra le due guerre]

In the years between the two world wars, the operational structure of the Assicurazioni Generali underwent multiple, mostly unforeseen, changes, which forced it to increase its internationalization. On the one hand, the personalities of the three Presidents in charge of running the company during this period proved to be decisive. On the other hand, the need to preserve the company's profitability, along with the control over the core business, created the conditions for an expansion of its operational area, both geographically and in terms of the services it provided to customers. At the same time, the growing involvement of the company in the dynamics (economic, but also political) of the Italian Fascist party, increasingly limited the operational freedom of the top management, until it was almost completely replaced as a result of the racial laws. However, the fact that the new managers maintained opportunistic operational practices is significant. In words, they followed the dictates of the Fascist regime, while in fact placing the interests of the company at the centre of their activities.

Negli anni tra le due guerre mondiali, la struttura operativa delle Assicurazioni Generali fu sottoposta a molteplici sollecitazioni, per lo più impreviste, che costrinsero ad accelerare l’evoluzione verso una compiuta internazionalizzazione del gruppo. Da un lato, furono determinanti le personalità dei tre Presidenti che si avvicendarono al vertice della Compagnia in questo periodo. Dall’altro, la necessità di conservare la redditività aziendale, assieme al controllo del core business, crearono le condizioni per un allargamento dell’area operativa, sia in termini geografici che dal punto di vista dei servizi offerti alla clientela. Parallelamente, il coinvolgimento sempre più profondo all’interno delle dinamiche (economiche, ma anche politiche) del partito fascista progressivamente limitarono la libertà operativa del gruppo dirigente, fino a sostituirlo quasi del tutto in conseguenza dell’adozione delle leggi razziali. Significativo il fatto, però, cha anche la nuova dirigenza in realtà abbia mantenuto pratiche operative sostanzialmente opportunistiche, dimostrandosi ossequiosa ai dettemi del regime a parole, ma agendo di fatto ponendo al centro dell’interesse il futuro della Compagnia.
