Italian society has made an investment in high-quality education for children less than 3 years o f age. In recent years, a widespread debate throughout Europ about how to define and describe "quality" in early childhood services has stimulated Italian educators to re-examine what they do. One particular issue upon which we have focused concerns the inserimento, the time during which the family and the professionals first meet and begin to work together.
