ABSTRACT: Modelling water fluxes is a useful tool in soil and groundwater remediation, but unsaturated zone model-ling is made difficult by problems related with soil and contaminant characteristics. Soil characterization needs expen-sive and time consuming measures and contaminant characteristics are often site specific. Pedotransfer Functions (PTF) can be built up and validated on the basis of experimental data in order to make it possible to characterize the soil by means of simple texture data. Some examples of water and contaminant transport models are presented, implemented by utilizing either soil direct measures or PTF functions in MACRO and MACRO&SOILN numerical codes. In order to evaluate the role of contaminant distribution into the unsaturated zone in remediation actions, even theoretical cases ha-ve been performed in several scenarios.
