A draft Protocol to the Barcelona Convention relating to the integrated management of the Mediterranean coastal zones has been recently prepared by a group of experts within the framework of the UNEP Mediterranean Action Plan. A future treaty on this subject could have an influence on matters which are closely related to the domestic jurisdiction of States parties, such as the obligation to plan all the activities which take place in the coastal zone and the prohibition of activities which harm fragile coastal ecosystems.
