Calvino stated that the literature should work «on the untranslatable brink of the language». The last page of The Baron in the Trees contains a very unusual term which is hard to turn in any foreign language. This article surveys several translations, and highlights the three conclusions of Calvino’s heraldic trilogy, where the end of the narrative is always intertwined with the theme of disappearance.

Calvino ha scritto che la letteratura dovrebbe lavorare «sul margine di intraducibilità della lingua». Nel finale del Barone rampante compare un vocabolo inconsueto e assai difficile da tradurre. Dopo aver preso in esame alcune soluzioni proposte dai traduttori, questo articolo mette a un confronto i finali dei romanzi della trilogia araldica, dove l’esaurirsi della narrazione si intreccia sempre con il tema della sparizione.
