Mass spectrometers are designed to measure ratios between isotopes and elements. Current archeometric research employs various instrumental designs: gas mass spectrometers, thermal ionization mass spectrometers, accelerator mass spectrometers, and plasma source mass spectrometers. Design features go hand in hand with the specific class of problems that is addressed. As analytical precision increases and data-bases include more potential source areas for archeological objects, it becomes clear that only multi-method context can lead to innovation in unravelling provenance.
