In the country's social and political debate, the issue of participation of immigrants to national elections is becoming increasingly important and of growing interest. In the past, an adequate basis of information to establish a debate based, for example, on primary data collection was not available. Only recently, thanks to the Centre for Regional Integration and Multiethnic (ORIM), it has been possible to study the foreigners’ willingness to take part to the electoral process and their proximity to antithetical political positions. The source of data considered in this paper refers to the results of the 2009 ORIM survey. The main aim of this paper is to draw the profile of foreign voters and to consider the different ideal types defined. To this purpose, we will make use of both techniques for positive analysis and methods based on decision trees. More specifically, the profile identification process will be carried out through a two-stage approach. First, we will identify different typologies of closness through different political orientations: left political proximity; right political proximity, etc. Then, conditional on these typologies, we will try to detect the presence of different profiles in immigrant voters.
