Starting from a case of direct discrimination on the ground of religion during the access to employment, the paper deals with the issue of impediments to women wearing the veil in the workplace as a form of multifactorial discrimination, because of the impact on gender policies, and as an obstacle against islamic women cultural emancipation. Another issue addressed is the right of the worker to express his/her identity at the workplace, assessing whether the employer can place aesthetic requirements. Finally, the paper analyzes the acceptance of indirect discrimination, that may be justified when the objective of differences of treatment is legitimate, as the corporate neutrality, reflecting on the need for the workplace to be a democratic place, where all differences could be expressed

Abstract
Starting from a case of direct discrimination on the ground of religion during the access to employment, the paper deals with the issue of impediments to women wearing the veil in the workplace as a form of multifactorial discrimination, because of the impact on gender policies, and as an obstacle against islamic women cultural emancipation. Another issue addressed is the right of the worker to express his/her identity at the workplace, assessing whether the employer can place aesthetic requirements. Finally, the paper analyzes the acceptance of indirect discrimination, that may be justified when the objective of differences of treatment is legitimate, as the corporate neutrality, reflecting on the need for the workplace to be a democratic place, where all differences could be expressedI documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
