The article aims to show the conceptual syntax which underpins the use of the metaphor of "barbarity" in the Marxist tradition, and at the same time the modifications of its content in relation to different historical conjunctures. The article analyses the use of the term in some relevant topoi: in the work of Marx and Engels; in Rosa Luxemburg's "junius Pamplhet"; in Benjamin and the debate during the IInternational Congress for Culture Defence, after WWI. Finally, the article examines the use of the metaphor after WWII, focusing on Adorno's crucial use of "barbarity" to stress the barbaric character of capitalistic cultural industry, and on its use as a form of critique of real socialism by the group "Socialism ou barbaire".

The article analyses the use of the term in some relevant topoi: in the work of Marx and Engels; in Rosa Luxemburg's "junius Pamplhet"; in Benjamin and the debate during the IInternational Congress for Culture Defence, after WWI. Finally, the article examines the use of the metaphor after WWII, focusing on Adorno's crucial use of "barbarity" to stress the barbaric character of capitalistic cultural industry, and on its use as a form of critique of real socialism by the group "Socialism ou barbaire".File | Dimensione | Formato | |
