Abstract

We use survey data collected over 40 years to understand changes related to traditional inequalities in couples' breadwinning patterns. Implicitly, we investigate the wife's role in the Japanese society by accounting for factors influencing the active role of the women in the labour force. While accounting for informative sampling and missing responses we advance research and theory on the field by adopting a model based on an underlying ordinal latent variable to explore the connections with demographic and social-related factors.
