In this paper a general formula for the anomalies and the counterterms for a quantum field theory on a multidimensional proper riemannian manifold is guessed. In particular it is shown that the theory may not be odd-loop finite and anomaly free over an odd-dimensional space owing to contributions arising from the Chern-Simons secondary characteristic classes. © 1985.
