Introduction 285 Classification 285 Pathophysiology 285 ICU management of neurotrauma 286 Neuromonitoring 286 Clinical neurologic assessment 287 Radiologic monitoring 287 ICP monitoring and intracranial volume control 288 Restoring and preservation of cerebral homeostasis 290 Cerebral blood flow and autoregulation 290 Cerebral metabolism 291 Neuroprotective agents 291 Conclusion 291 References 292 Neurotrauma or traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an acute brain dysfunction that is caused by an external mechanical force (direct impact, penetrating trauma, acceleration, deceleration, or blastwave). This chapter focuses on the current standards of ICU neurologic care for neurotrauma.
