The aim of evaluation is to improve the education systems, especially the ways of students’ learning and the success of the training outcomes (in terms of acquisition of skills, employability, satisfaction, etc.). University was the first educational institution to start this path and, over time, the focus of its attention has expanded to all those aspects which contribute to the definition of processes and outcomes. This essay analyzes the evaluation of university teaching in Italy. It starts from the definition of its objectives, and after describes the assignments and functions of ANVUR. The paper focuses on AVA system - self-assessment, periodic evaluation and accreditation. The principal aim is to highlight the main critical issues of the evaluation system of university teaching that has been implemented in Italy until now.

Abstract
