This paper introduces fuzzy sets and offers an overview of their theory after more than fifty years since their appearance, occurred in 1965 due to Lotfi Zadeh. Besides the basic notions, some hints on the historical context in which they developed and the disciplines they have contributed to are put forward. Then, the major successes are illustrated. Finally, the role of fuzzy sets in uncertainty management is examined and their legacy in several disciplines is highlighted.
