The fast development of novel technological solutions in human activities occurring nowadays raises the need of a wise employment of natural resources. Some materials are presently considered as critical due to several different causes like natural scarcity, political issues between different countries, or environmental problems. In the talk these aspects will be considered; the strategy of the European Community in order to face them will be presented, describing the actions adopted to improve the consciousness of industries, research sectors, and population in material substitution and recycling.
