I cinquant'anni della Guerra dei sei giorni: alcune questioni poste dal ritiro dell'UNEF e dalla chiusura dello stretto di Tiran

Fifty years after the Six Day War, some aspects of this conflict seem to be still interesting and relevant today. Establishing who started the hostilities resulting in the Six Day War takes over the evaluation whether some choices taken by Egypt could be considered a valid reason to explain the use of armed force by Israel by means of preventive self-defence. We refer, in particular, to President Nasser’s request to withdraw the UNEF and the decision to close the Strait of Tiran. Such choices, according to Israel, showed the intention of Egypt to begin a war of aggression. As far as the UNEF is concerned, the Egyptian request of its withdrawal has been basically managed by the then Secretary-General of the United Nations, in spite of a “primacy” of other UN organs in maintaining international peace and security. Some doubts could be risen in considering the closure of the Strait of Tiran as a casus belli.
