Elevated office and normal out-of-office blood pressure (BP), as assessed by home or ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM) measurements, defines the white coat hypertension (WCH) pattern; vice versa, the combination of normal office and elevated out-of-office BP identifies the so-called masked hypertension (MH). In both cases, the classification of BP status by office measurements is not confirmed outside the medical environment; both WCH and MH are frequent conditions in the general population and represent a relevant issue in clinical practice. In this chapter we will focus on several aspects concerning WCH and MH such as diagnostic criteria, prevalence, reproducibility, association with cardiac and extra-cardiac subclinical damage and prognostic significance

Abstract
Elevated office and normal out-of-office blood pressure (BP), as assessed by home or ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM) measurements, defines the white coat hypertension (WCH) pattern; vice versa, the combination of normal office and elevated out-of-office BP identifies the so-called masked hypertension (MH). In both cases, the classification of BP status by office measurements is not confirmed outside the medical environment; both WCH and MH are frequent conditions in the general population and represent a relevant issue in clinical practice. In this chapter we will focus on several aspects concerning WCH and MH such as diagnostic criteria, prevalence, reproducibility, association with cardiac and extra-cardiac subclinical damage and prognostic significanceI documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
