Sovereignty represents the key concept of the modern State and 1648 is traditionally considered to be its date of birth. Nevertheless the birth process of the modern State is a much more complex phenomenon, to which the Lutheran Reformation made a major contribution. In particular, this paper will address two main issues from a legal-philosophical viewpoint: how the Lutheran Reformation superseded the Medieval model of sovereignty; how it was able to stabilize the constitutive elements of the Nation State, like the idea of a territory based legal system
