A new solventless method for the synthesis of symmetrical and unsymmetrical ureas, starting from ethylene carbonate and amines, is reported. 1,5,7-Triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene(TBD) and thioureas have been found to be efficient organocatalysts for this reaction. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.
