Silence is one of the ways through which the complicated legacies of internal enslavement and slave trade come to the fore in the contemporary Gambia. Drawing on ethnography, oral history and archival materials, the chapter interrogate silence as a politics to cherish the past through the very practice of censorship. Semi-revelations sign-post the past of enslavement and slavery as difficult to discuss in public. In so doing they trigger curiosity, as much as rumors through which memories of the censored past continue to thrive onto the corners of social life.
