The article concerns the development of a pluralistic European society in which the institutional complexity, but also the complexity of the life-world of its citizens, have been steadily increasing. How we think, teach and deal with religions becomes a privileged subject of analysis and debate, in the perspective of a post-secular society. Are the European systems of education adequate to respond to the new social and cultural demands, and capable enough to deal with growing cultural diversity and religious plurality? ‘Return’ of the religion into the political public space from 1989 on, the principles of pluralism and tolerance in the EU unification and integration process and, finally, the models and justifications of religious teaching in the public schools, will be problematized in the following paragraphs.
