The aim of this paper is to highlight the aspects of the baroreflex control of the cardiovascular system that could be relevant to the analysis and modelling of cardiovascular oscillations and regulation. In particular, complex and/or controversial issues of the baroreflex control are addressed on the basis of results obtained in previous studies by others as well as by our group. Attention has been focused on time-variant and nonlinear characteristics of the baroreflex function and on the influence of this physiological mechanism on different frequency regions of blood pressure and heart rate spectra. © 2009 The Royal Society.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to highlight the aspects of the baroreflex control of the cardiovascular system that could be relevant to the analysis and modelling of cardiovascular oscillations and regulation. In particular, complex and/or controversial issues of the baroreflex control are addressed on the basis of results obtained in previous studies by others as well as by our group. Attention has been focused on time-variant and nonlinear characteristics of the baroreflex function and on the influence of this physiological mechanism on different frequency regions of blood pressure and heart rate spectra. © 2009 The Royal Society.
