INTRODUCTION. Technological innovation in endodontics cannot be separated from knowledge of dental anatomy. The study of this hidden and complex world lasts since more than a hundred years. AIM OF THE WORK. To obtain information useful for endodontic treatment through the systematic observation of root anatomy. ANATOMIC ASPECTS. The Authors underline the importance of the pulp chamber as an anantomical space evolving with time where a proper access must be opened to reach apex easily. Dental roots may have a tubular or a laminar form; their characteristics, distribution and structural complexity are described. This knowledge is strategic to avoid treatment failure. CLINICAL ASPECTS. At the end of the Sixties Weine and Vertucci described root anatomy in such a detailed manner that is even today. Clinical and radiographic signs (such as the presence of a single or double contour and the classification of Laurichesse based on radiography and anatomy) should be always taken into consideration for a correct treatment plan.
