Starting from the linguistic analysis of the ten written minutes of the “Consulte e pratiche” drawn up by Niccolò Machiavelli between 1505 and 1509, this paper aims to show how his transcription activity differs from that of other transcribers, especially that of Biagio Buonaccorsi, and to illustrate how Machiavelli took advantage of the daily practice of chancery language, as testified by these documents, to construct his own personal style and vocabulary.
