The presentation focus the attention on some challenges for grassroots organizations of waste pickers, starting from an ethnographic study conducted in Porto Alegre, Brazil. In this context grassroots movements seem to recall ‘pre-industrial’ unionism, giving more options to waste pickers to improve their working conditions and their collective voice.
