The chapter analyses the importance and features of unstable employment considering all those forms of employment that do not give workers guarantees on the continuity of their employment. The analysis is carried out exploring both the individual and the household dimensions in order to highlight whether employment instability generates higher levels of vulnerability for individuals and households. Results show that in Western European countries, labour-market histories and transitions rather than the overall rate of unstable employment account for greater vulnerability of workers in a frame where different work/family models play a relevant role.

Abstract

The chapter analyses the importance and features of unstable employment considering all those forms of employment that do not give workers guarantees on the continuity of their employment. The analysis is carried out exploring both the individual and the household dimensions in order to highlight whether employment instability generates higher levels of vulnerability for individuals and households. Results show that in Western European countries, labour-market histories and transitions rather than the overall rate of unstable employment account for greater vulnerability of workers in a frame where different work/family models play a relevant role.
