The aim of this paper is to focus on the circumstances that explain lone mothers' dynamics of poverty in different European settings characterized by different family and social policy systems: Belgium, Germany, Great Britain, Italy and Sweden. Questions such as: "Are poverty spells for lone mothers longer?", "Is the probability of suffering ecurrent or chronic poverty higher for lone mothers than for other groups?", "Do lone mothers' poverty spells differ among different welfare systems?" should be answered.
