The focus of this International Review of Sociology (IRS) special issue is to observe and discuss how masculinity is performed by men who work in ‘non-traditional’ occupations. By discussing how male workers manage to reconcile the feminine nature of their work with the hegemonic gender regime, this collection of essays focuses on key issues in promoting gender equality and in understanding gender change. The special issue has two further aims. The first one is to show the importance of sociological research, in regard to the role played by work in the social construction of masculinity. The second one is to emphasize the importance of the gender perspective for the study of social change, particularly in labour market research
