The representation of the bond between mothers and children in ancient Greek culture is highly complex and displays unexpected and significant characteristics. Through the analysis of iconographic as well as epic, lyrical, historical, theatrical and philosophical sources from both Archaic and Classical periods, the author identifies semantic nuclei, stereotypes and images reflecting ambivalences and concerns that were subsequently to persist throughout the history of our culture. The relationship between mothers and sons/daughters was not perceived and represented as a given or “natural”, but as a key factor in the structuring of the personal, social and cultural identity of the offspring, frequently at odds with the ties and rules of society. Furthermore the sources point up interesting differences between the representation of the mother-son relationship and that of the mother-daughter relationship, as well as significant shifts in both these representations as the Archaic period gave way to the Classical era. The bond between mothers and daughters, which in the Archaic period was represented as based on empathy, sharing and physical and emotional closeness, came to be viewed in the Classical period as an intense, indecipherable and incontrollable relationship, to the extent of threatening and even endangering the civilized world as it was known
