In our contemporary society, imagination plays a pivotal role in the education of the subjects, particularly thanks to the widespread use of technologies in the field of communication. From a pedagogical point of view, this means that the imagination stimulated by the media has an educational function. It influences learning processes, socialization, and education, thus mediating the relationship between people and social realities. Moving from these assumptions, the article adopts the category of the obscene in order to galvanize a critic reflection of the media’s imagination. More specifically, thanks to this category, the article wishes to give a theoretical recognition of the questions underlying the phenomenon of the spectacularization of sorrow, with the intent of showing some of its relevant ethical, cultural, and pedagogical implications. The notion of the obscene, in fact, helps to understand the reasons why the spreading of images related to tragic events produces moral annihilation, rather than the awakening of individual and collective consciences. This article is divided into four parts. The first part explores and problematizes some of the contemporary moral and educational drifts of the imagination. In particular, the connection between the exhibition of death and sorrow by the media and the moral attitude of the audience are the major concerns here. In the second part, a broad definition of the category of the obscene is provided in alliance with the notion of modesty. It is inevitable to call modesty in question, in order to understand the obscene: in fact, any discourse on the obscene immediately evokes modesty and vice versa. This is the hypotheses that underlies this analysis. Two historical and theoretical contexts of particular significance related to the conceptual clarification of the relationship between modesty and the obscene are therefore identified. In the third part, the theoretical framework mentioned above is adopted in order to focus on the question of the obscene in the contemporary imagination. How this imagination creates a progressive symbolical impoverishment in the outlook of the subject and how this impoverishment is connected to moral indifference towards the tragic events reproduced by the media are the focal points of this section. In the fourth part, the necessity to formulate pedagogical strategies aiming at re-educating the outlook of the subjects is explored. This is a necessary step towards a renovated ethics in the subject’s relationship with images, as well as with the texture of symbolical, social, and material relationships that such images evoke.
