The study of sexual fantasy that can be defined as a sexually exciting mental image (Leitenberg and Henning, 1995), occupies an important role in scientific literature concerning sexuality. The majority of studies have focused on the content aspect of the fantasies. A smaller volume of research work focused on their vividness (or intensity). In this study two questionnaires to identify the vividness of sexual fantasies, Sexual Daydreaming Scale (SDS; Giambra and Martin, 1977) and the Hurlbert Index of Sexual Fantasy (HISF; Hurlbert and Apt, 1993), extended with two experimental items, were translated into Italian and administered simultaneously to a sample of 550 adults to identify their psychometric characteristics and to propose an interpretation. Factor analysis and reliability analysis have made it possible to identify six factors with high internal consistency coefficients, interpreted as follows: 1) intensity of the fantasies; 2) sharing the fantasies with the partner; 3) sense of guilt; 4) reluctance towards the fantasies; 5) negative experience; 6) communication difficulties with the partner. The two original scales only partially overlap. The correlations between the scales identified suggest that the study of sexual fantasies should not be separated from the study of other important factors (sense of guilt, discomfort, communication, passed sexual experience) strictly associated with sexual activity.
