The field of second language acquisition (SLA) is a discipline inside applied linguistics concerned with theoretical approaches to language teaching and learning. This paper, intended as a contribution to SLA, will analyse the practice of language learning advising based on the concept of autonomous learning. The first part of the paper will give an overview of existing literature on language learning advising and of SLA studies which led to the development of the concept of autonomous learning. The main part will focus on the practice of language learning advising and discuss four case studies in an academic context. It will be concluded that an interdisciplinary approach to research on language learning advising will emphasise the advisor’s functions as facilitator and mediator within the process of autonomous language learning.
