Why do cultures come into collision? And, when they don’t, how do they interact? In the global arena, these broad questions are at the core of the cultural debates. Seeing cultures as complex and unstable networks informed by the controversial dialectic between “power and civilisation”, this essay proposes a possible alternative in representing intercultural practices as a way of building a shared ground between cultures, where differences and oppositions can be engaged and thought anew. This interaction of knowledge between social actors of different backgrounds can operate as a mirror that shows the limit of reciprocal viewpoints and at the same time indicates the ways the ‘others’ are located within our representations. Within this frame a continuous intercultural learning process in different contexts of life becomes crucial for education and teaching, as the paper tries to argue.
