The Red Brigades were first formed in Milan. There they acted exclusively until 1972. The book reconstructs both the origins and the activities of Italian most renowned terrorist group on the basis of three kind of unpublished sources, as well as published works and newspapers articles: coming from the Ministry of the Interior kept in the Archivio Centrale dello Stato (State Central Archive) in Rome; documents of Provincial Federation of the Italian Communist Party kept in the Archive of Istituto per la storia dell'età contemporanea (Isec, Contemporary History Institute) in Sesto S. Giovanni (Milan); sentences from criminal trials held in Milan. The book tries to deal with the subject using only historiography cahtegories and method as until recently the history of terrorism in Italy has been written by journalists or former terrorists. The main results of the research is maybe the evidence that the Italian Communist Party had fought the Red Brigades since the kidnapping of Mario Sossi with all its might and not only after the kidnapping of Aldo Moro. The book also recounts in detail the final years of the Red Brigades in Milan, when the “Walter Alasia” column split from the rest of the organization trying to maintain the “original” working-class attitude it had had in the beginning of its history.
