In the last decades, the run-up in both the fossil fuel prices and the related global warming turned the attention towards environmentally clean alternative energy resources. Among them, solar photovoltaics is a reliable choice to tackle the strong increase of the global energy demand. The development of low cost and efficient solar cells has been therefore a key target of the research community. The most important classes of photovoltaic devices developed in the last sixty years as well as some new concepts for high efficiency solar cells will be reviewed in this paper, in order to depict the state-of-the-art of solar photovoltaics

Abstract

In the last decades, the run-up in both the fossil fuel prices and the related global warming turned the attention towards environmentally clean alternative energy resources. Among them, solar photovoltaics is a reliable choice to tackle the strong increase of the global energy demand. The development of low cost and efficient solar cells has been therefore a key target of the research community. The most important classes of photovoltaic devices developed in the last sixty years as well as some new concepts for high efficiency solar cells will be reviewed in this paper, in order to depict the state-of-the-art of solar photovoltaics
