Forms of collective mobilization oriented toward shared and collective energy production and distribution can be found in the European landscape as early as the first half of the 20th century. Over time, practices have developed and diversified, and to date the European landscape presents different ones. The Italian context also has a history of historical cooperatives and today experiments with the most modern modes of energy communities. Indeed, the current energy crisis and climate change have pushed the reflection and made more urgent the activation of regulatory framework, practices and experiments. The contribution presents the European framework and some Italian good practices, highlighting risks and opportunities of energy communities as an innovative tool with great potential.
