This article focuses on the renewable energy community (REC), according to directive (EU) 2018/2001 (to be transposed by 30 June 2021) and on the citizen energy communities (CEC), according to directive (EU) 2019/944 (to be transposed by 31 December 2020), all together the energy communities according to the EU law. The intention of the EU legislation is that energy communities can help EU Member States to achieve the objective of the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change. After having compared RECs and CECs, the author, taking into ac-count also the National energy and climate plan for 2021-2030 (approved by the Italian Government at the end of 2019), imagines how the EU law on energy communities will be implemented in Italy and which legal forms will be able to be used to set up Italian energy communities. The primary purpose of these autonomous legal entities is to provide environmental, economic or social community benefits for its shareholders or members or for the local areas where it operates, rather than financial profits.
