This study records the progressive deterioration of the water quality of Lake Iseo due to the phenomenon of eutrophication. Phosphorous concentrations have increased markedly since 1967, when studies began, and the phytoplankton population is now typical of a lake in moderately eutrophic conditions. The impact of eutrophication on the hypolimnetic water is accentuated by the oligomictic nature of the lake, and by the fact that there has been no complete overturn in the lake for several years now. Dissolved oxygen concentrations in the hypolimnion have consequently undergone a marked decrease since the last complete overturn of the lake, in 1981; anoxic conditions were found in the water below 200 m in summer 1994
