Douala is not only the economic capital of Cameroon, but it is also a lively cultural centre. In addition to a highly credited international art production, it is a stage for a myriad of more popular art initiatives, such as videos, music, and stand-up comedies. In this article, I focus on the local video production and trace its strong economic purpose. In doing so, I intend to contribute to the discussion on contemporary African cinema, blurring the clear-cut distinction between Francophone production, usually characterized by its political engagement, and its Anglophone counterpart, often associated with commercial cinema, such as Nigerian Nollywood.
