Abstract

The J.H. Johnson Collection, which is deposited at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C., may be split into discrete sections, one of which is dedicated to the post-Carboniferous calcareous fossil algae of Guatemala. The contents of the latter, which was established more than half a century ago and which is a reference section for the Americas (for a long time, it was the only one), is reassessed here in the light of the recent advances in paleophycological systematics. Ascriptions to species, genera and higher taxonomic ranks of these Chlorophyta, Rhodophyta and microbial structures are sometimes confirmed or more often revised. Despite limited information, in some cases it was possible to refine or even correct the ages of the fossil strata, which span the Permian - Miocene interval.
