The thesis investigates the dynamics of interaction between hardcore fans and the police in several case studies in Italy and the UK, through participant observation and in depth interviews with both fans and police officers. The thesis focuses on three inter-related analytical dimensions: fans’ cultures, policing styles and the space. The first section compares the symbolic meaning the football stadium “ends” (or “curvas”) hold for their “inhabitants”, the different models of the social aggregation of fans and their different uses of the space. The thesis then explores the policing measures adopted in football grounds by comparing practices and strategies of Italy and the UK. The differences are traced back to the origins and the functions of the police institution, offering an interpretative frame of the policing styles in the two national contexts. The third dimension is connected with the public-ness or private-ness of football facilities and the implications the “mallification” of the stadia has in the managing of security and social control.
