Virtual reality (VR) is changing the way in which the human brain and behavior are studied. The fruits of this research are being applied in the real world for therapeutic purposes. In addition to basic research into brain function, VR has been successfully applied in the domains of mental health disorders, pain management, and neurorehabilitation, offering distinct advantages over traditional treatments and providing a high degree of control over the therapeutic and rehabilitative experiences. This entry defines VR and discusses its therapeutic applications
