After briefly reviewing the international literature on the topic, the article discusses the multifaceted and complex representation of old age that characterized ancient Greek civilization. The author analyzes typical figures from literature and potraits, such as the wise teacher, the wet nurse and the old prophetess, which reflect an image of older men and women as protective towards the younger generations and endowed with experience, perspective and awareness. Exloration of epic poetry and tragedies however yields a somewhat more ambiguous image: the elderly may also feel abbandoned and useless; or display an almost paradoxical attachment to life. Furthermore, both the literary and the figurative evidence ancient Greek culture to have engaged with key questions regarding the relationship between older and younger generations and the role of older people in the family and society.
