Abstract

Little attention has been given to methodological issues of focus groups intervieweing in multinational studies and as conducted in multicultural communities. In this chapter we discuss the use of focus groups as the primary data colleacting method in the Children Crossing Borders study. We discuss the choices we made as we adjusted our focus group method to deal with particula features and challenges of the study, including the often sensitive nature of the topics discussed (for example, immigration status, religion, prejudice, and social exclusion); the diversity of the informants (parents as well as teachers, recent immigrant as well as non immigrant, from multiple cultural, national, and social class backgrounds); the variety of settings; group composition; and facilitatied by researchers who were in some cases insiders, and in some cases outsiders to the communtieis studied. The complex structural features confronted us with methodological decisions and challenges logicistical, epistemological and ethical
