The essay discusses the thorny issue of the role of the administrator of lying estate in a historical and comparative perspective. Building on the problems that this institution highlights in the current Italian civil law, above all in relation to connections between powers of administration of the called heir and of the curator, the author analyses the historical origins of the institute itself in Roman law and its development in the following centuries, suggesting possible paths of reflection to contemporary interpreters
