The article focuses on the topic of professional competences and it proposes an analysis of the competences that are required to the graduates in sociology (Bachelor Degree) in the different work positions in which they are employed, as well as an examination of the skills that the graduates think they have obtained through the triennial education and training. Emerging data confirm the variety of professional profiles in which the graduates are employed. Between the markedly sociological ones it is possible to distinguish a profile focused on project design, one centred on research, and a managerial and organizational one. Next to them, professional positions connoted by contiguous and “ausiliary” skills (ability to read and interpret legal texts and economic data) and/or focused on transversal skills have a relevant weight. Concerning the self-assessment of the acquired skills, the picture that emerges is broadly positive about specific skills, while some problems have been recorded for soft skills (know how to write and present reports, ability to work in teams) whose acquisition appear to be limited, especially in consideration of their growing appreciation in all the professional position
